Often referred to as the rainforests of the sea, coral reefs are complex, biologically diverse ecosystems that are vital to the health of the larger ocean ecosystem, as well as to coastal economies and communities. Worldwide, the health of coral reefs are in a state of crisis as global climate change and detrimental human impacts stress their fragile ecosystems. A sick reef can't support critical fish and invertebrate populations, or sustain important local natural resources .
