What is Reef Check?
An International Non-profit Coral Reef Monitoring OrganizationReef Check Foundation is a community-based, volunteer, coral reef monitoring program involving recreational divers and marine scientists. Although initially designed as a one-time assessment of coral reef health on a global scale, throughout the world local communities have embraced the opportunity to help monitor their reefs. Expanding its efforts to 90 countries and territories throughout the world today, Reef Check Foundation has developed a world-wide database of reef health based on uniform methodology, and serves the Global Coral Reef Monitoring System’s community-based monitoring needs. Reef Check Hawai`iSince 1997 , Reef Check Hawai`i has been surveying reefs, training monitoring teams and educating the public throughout the Main Hawaiian Islands about the value and importance of the coral reef ecosystem. This past September we were recognized for our dedication and commitment to coral reef conservation, education, and stewardship at the Hawai`i Living Reefs Awards. Receiving our official non-profit 501 (c) 3 status this past October, Reef Check Hawai`i moves into the International Year of the Reef with escalating momentum. We look forward to an eventful, enlightening and dynamic year, implementing and encouraging positive change for the preservation of coral reefs across Hawai`i.
